Best Time to Visit the Maldives: A Month-by-Month Guide

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but the two monsoon seasons shape everything from price to surf to underwater visibility. Here is when to go and why.

There is no truly bad time to visit the Maldives — it sits on the equator, so it is warm all year. But two monsoon seasons quietly determine your weather, your budget and what you will see underwater.

The two seasons

  • Dry season (Nov–Apr): The northeast monsoon brings sunshine, calm seas and the best conditions. This is peak season, with peak prices.

  • Wet season (May–Oct): The southwest monsoon brings short, heavy showers and more wind. Fewer crowds, lower prices, and surprisingly good marine encounters.

Month by month

  • December–March: Prime time. Clear skies, flat lagoons, festive-season premiums.

  • April: Hot and calm with excellent visibility — a sweet spot before the rains.

  • May–July: Wetter and breezier, but this is when plankton draws mantas and whale sharks.

  • August–October: Variable weather, the best value, and a great window for surfers.

Plan around what you want

Chasing flawless beach days? Aim for the dry season. Travelling on a budget or hoping to snorkel with mantas? The wet season rewards you with lower rates and big-animal encounters. Either way, pack reef-safe sunscreen and a flexible attitude to the odd passing shower.
