With warm water, sky-high visibility and reefs teeming with life, the Maldives is a bucket-list destination underwater. A primer for snorkellers and divers alike.
The Maldives is, quite simply, one of the planet’s great underwater destinations. Bath-warm water, visibility that stretches for tens of metres, and reefs alive with colour make it as good for first-time snorkellers as it is for seasoned divers.
Snorkelling: start at the house reef
Many islands have a living reef just off the beach. Grab a mask and you may share the water with parrotfish, reef sharks, turtles and rays within minutes. Always check local currents and entry points with your host first.
Diving: channels, thilas and giants
Channels (kandus): Currents funnel nutrients and big animals through atoll passes.
Thilas: Underwater pinnacles bursting with soft coral and fish.
Manta & whale sharks: Seasonal plankton blooms bring the ocean’s gentle giants close.
Dive responsibly
Coral is fragile and slow-growing. Never touch or stand on it, keep a safe distance from marine life, perfect your buoyancy, and wear reef-safe sunscreen. The reefs you protect today are the reason anyone visits tomorrow.
